What is the Rustic Römertopf terracotta oven

Terracotta ovens are the signature pieces of Römertopf. The German brand has been a benchmark in clay roasters for decades. These Roman pots bring back the art of traditional cooking and have an unmistakable design, like the pots used by the Romans, with reliefs on the lid and base inspired by farm animals and garden produce.

. These ovens are made from natural Westerwald clay (Germany), completely free of lead, cadmium, dyes, plasticizers, or toxic substances. In these very roasters, only the inside of the base has a vitrified glazed finish, but the rest of the oven is unglazed. They are semi-porous and, when soaked before you start cooking with them, they are perfect for cooking with interior steam, without needing to add oil or fat extra.

Römertopf terracotta ovens offer a traditional, efficient, and simple way of cooking. Clay is one of the oldest and safest cooking materials known, and it also distributes heat evenly, preserving the juices, aromas, and nutrients of the food. Cooking is natural, healthy, and low in fat; foods cook gently and the results are very tender and flavorful inside, and crisp and golden outside.

How to cook with the Rustic Römertopf terracotta oven

When you receive your Römertopf terracotta oven, you’ll need to wash it and also give the lid a long soak. The lid must be submerged in water for 45 minutes. Once the time is up, take the lid out of the water and let it air dry. The base, since it has a vitrified glaze, does not need this initial soak, and you only need to do this long soak for the lid once.

When you’re ready to cook, you’ll see how easy it is:

  • The first step is to soak the terracotta oven. Submerge the base and lid of the roaster in cold water for 15 minutes. When you soak the oven, the clay absorbs the water and releases it as steam during cooking. A moist environment is created inside the roaster, keeping the food juicy without needing to add oil. This ensures a more tender result.
  • Dry the base of the roaster and place the food inside. For roasting a chicken, this oven is undoubtedly the best choice; red meat, fish, vegetables, and greens also turn out wonderfully. With it, you can roast, braise, bake, and stew all kinds of food. Season to taste, but you won’t need to add oil or fat.
  • Drain the lid to remove excess water and place it over the base, covering the terracotta oven.
  • Place the roaster in the cold oven and heat the oven to the temperature required by the recipe (usually between 180 and 250 °C). The roaster should heat up gradually, at the same time as the oven.
  • Let it cook for the required time. The steam generated inside the roaster oven will cook the food in a healthy, aromatic, and gentle way, without drying it out
  • As soon as it’s ready, bring the terracotta oven to the table to serve. Its beautiful, artistic design makes it ideal for presenting your recipes directly in the roaster. And the integrated handle on the lid allows for comfortable and safe handling
  • When the roaster oven is cold, you can wash it normally, by hand or in the dishwasher. But it’s not advisable to leave it soaking for a long time, and before storing it, it must be completely dry.

Its wonderful temperature distribution, easy and convenient use, and manufacturing from natural, healthy materials make it a high-value kitchen piece. With this terracotta oven you can prepare all kinds of recipes: stews, roasted vegetables, meat, fish, seafood, and also bake bread and cakes. It is an essential ally for making life easier in the kitchen and achieving tasty, juicy results.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To cook with Römertopf clay roasters and ovens, the oven must be cold, the oven must never be preheated before placing the terracotta roaster inside. The roaster should heat up gradually, at the same time as the oven.

The Rustic Römertopf terracotta oven is suitable for cooking in the oven. It is not suitable for stovetops or direct heat sources.
